Besançon Tourist Office

Besançon, capital of the Franche-Comté region, is a UNESCO world heritage site, and is particularly famous for its fortifications, which were built by the renowned French military architect, Vauban.

Besançon Citadel

The citadel, built by Vauban 4 centuries ago, still seems to watch over Besançon old town, encircled by an ox-bow in the river Doubs. Its impressive architectural features (anticline, kilometres of walls, tenailles, half-bastions, demi-lunes, etc.), in combination with the natural and landscaped beauty of its surroundings, make the citadel one of Vauban's greatest achievements.

The fortress covers some 27 acres and overlooks the old town. Restored to its original magnificence, the castle is now a cultural venue and tourist attraction, where visitors are encouraged to learn more about the history of man, and, in the castle's zoo, other forms of life that inhabit our planet.
