The falls are formed by the confluence of two streams flowing from the beautiful waters of Lakes Bonlieu and Ilay, which has resulted in a series of remarkable waterfalls, each more beautiful than the last.
You can walk the length of the 31 falls, the most famous of which are L'Eventail (The Fan - 65m), Le Grand Saut (The Great Fall - 60m), Le Gour Bleu (The Blue Gour Pool), Le Saut de la Forge (Forge Fall) and Le Saut Girard (Girard Fall 35m).
A 3.7km, 3-hour walk filled with refreshing delights:
a simple adventure face-to-face with nature.
As some stretches of the walk are quite steep and others can be slippery, make sure you follow these recommendations: wear shoes or boots, hold young children by the hand, keep dogs on leads, keep to the marked paths. SOS points can be found at various places along the path to help locate anyone in difficulty.
As this is a listed site, no fires, camping, motor vehicles, wild flower picking or rubbish tipping are allowed.
Please Note: this is not a circular route. To return to your vehicle, you must go back the way you came.
Visitors have a choice of 4 themed walks ('Cascades du Hérisson and crafts of the Middle Ages', 'The 4 lakes and Ilay Priory', 'Le Pic de l'Aigle and its castle', and 'Lake Bonlieu, Désert des Chartreux'), for which detailed historical information is provided. A RandoFiche guide for each walk is also available for purchase.
A RandoFiche guide for each walk is available for purchase, price 50 centimes each (available from local Tourist Offices, Tourist Office partners, and the Maison des Cascades).
An itinerary for a forty kilometre round trip is also available, taking in all the scenic viewpoints and enabling motorists to follow the trail of local tales and legends (Sylphe de Bonlieu, the White Lady ghost, Vouivre, the Lacuzon saga, the Narlay fairy and the village that was drowned).
